About
Stirling Energy Systems, Inc. (SES) is a developer of solar power generation equipment for utility-scale power plants. SES has developed an innovative and highly efficient solar energy technology that is ready for commercialization. The Company’s unique technology, the SunCatcher TM, combines a mirrored concentrator dish with a high-efficiency Stirling engine specially designed to convert sunlight to electricity.
Extended Stirling Video SES has contracts to build and operate two large power projects with major Californian utilities for up to 1,750 megawatts (MW) of power, representing the world’s two largest solar power contracts ever granted. Collectively, these contracts require up to 70,000 SunCatchers and further validate the commercial appeal of the technology.
SES is actively engaged in the commercialization of the SunCatcher, including continuing to prepare the system for mass production, completing project site-development and pre-construction activities and establishing partnerships with substantial manufacturing and industrial organizations to develop a cost-effective manufacturing process and supply chain.
SES was formed in the United States as a Nevada corporation in 1996 and was reincorporated in Delaware in March 2006. The Company maintains its corporate headquarters in Phoenix, Arizona. The company’s project and technical development offices are located in Tustin, California and its engineering and test site operations are located at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Technology
The solar thermal technology designed and adopted by Stirling Energy Systems is the SunCatcher. Each dish system on an annual basis is capable of producing 55,000 - 60,000 kWh of electricity.
The solar sites being developed by SES will consist of thousands of SunCatchers which will harness the power of the sun and generate it into electricity which will feed onto the grid system in California.
Product
What is the SunCatcher?
The SES SunCatcher is a 25 kW solar power system that has been designed to automatically track the sun and focus solar heat onto a power conversion unit (PCU). This in turn converts the intense heat to grid-quality electricity. The concentrator consists of a 38-foot diameter dish structure that supports 82 curved glass mirror facets, each three feet by four-feet in area. These mirrors concentrate solar energy onto the heater head of a high efficiency, 4 cylinder reciprocating Stirling cycle engine, generating up to 25 kW of electricity per system.
Stirling Engine
The Stirling Engine used by SES has been an industry test bed for various applications including automotive, solar, gas and diesel fuelled power. The particular engine used in this project is the 4-95 engine (4 cylinder, each 95cc displacement) that evolved from the Philips engines of the 1960’s. United Stirling of Sweden carried out the bulk of this work in the 1960’s and 70’s with technology transfer to the USA to develop automotive applications during the oil crisis.

About
Global Research Technologies, LLC (GRT) is a research and development company whose mission is the demonstration and commercialization of technologies for the capture of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is acknowledged to be a major greenhouse gas and a major contributor to global warming. Commercial implementation of GRT’s ACCESS™ (Atmospheric Carbon CapturE SystemS) technology will enable active management of global atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations irrespective of the source of the emissions.
Global Research Technologies is a privately-owned company which was founded in 2004. It currently occupies a 10,000 sq. ft. facility in Tucson, Arizona with administrative offices, a research laboratory, and a prototype development and demonstration area.

The Story
GRT was founded on the shared vision and unique capabilities of four people: Gary Comer, Allen Wright, Klaus Lackner and Wally Broecker. After sailing through the Northwest Passage in 2001 without being blocked by ice, Gary Comer was convinced that climate change was real. He vowed to take action.
Comer’s experience sparked his relationship with Wally Broecker, the Newberry Professor and a Crafoord Prize climate scientist at Columbia University’s Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory. In 2003, Broecker introduced Comer to Klaus Lackner and Allen Wright. Lackner, a widely recognized world leader in energy technologies, had developed the concept of carbon dioxide air-capture and written papers on carbon sequestration while at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Subsequently, Broecker convinced Lackner to join Columbia University as the Ewing Worzel Professor of Geophysics. Broecker had hired Wright to manage the interface between facilities and researchers at Biosphere 2 when that facility was operated by Columbia. He recognized Wright’s demonstrated ability to turn novel concepts into reality.
GRT was born in 2004, funded by Comer’s generosity and based on the strongly held belief of its founders that climate change solutions can and must be found. In 2007, GRT announced that it had successfully demonstrated that air-capture of carbon dioxide is technically feasible and economically promising. Currently it is refining and expanding its suite of air-capture technologies consistent with its mission.
