Biofuel

Biofuels can be defined as solid, liquid, or gas fuels derived from biological, renewable sources called biomass. Many of todays biomass used to produce biofuels include grain byproducts, sugar crops, trees, corn grains, oil seed crops, and grasses.

Renewable biofuels made from vegetable oils and other plant materials were used in some of the first combustion engines in the early 1900s until petroleum came to the mass market. It wasn’t until the last 30 years that they regained popularity in the U.S. due to global warming, supply scarcity, rising gas prices and politics surrounding foreign oil dependency. Now, the need for carbon-neutral fossil fuel alternatives in the U.S. and beyond is a widely accepted notion worldwide.
